In an interesting paper, Bennett et al. evaluated the correlation between the positivity of antibodies to
Helicobacter pylori (
H. pylori) in serum and the outcome of lung transplant outcome. The authors found that despite a similar prevalence of
H. pylori infection in patients with lung transplantation and in the general population, there was a higher prevalence of
H. pylori infection in patients who underwent lung transplant because of pulmonary fibrosis (
p = 0.049), and a lower prevalence in COPD patients (
p = 0.011). No correlation was found between this infection and graft outcome. Nevertheless, more patients who required three or more post-transplant re-hospitalizations were observed among those with
H. pylori positivity. The authors concluded that the prevalence of
H. pylori infection is not different to the general population in patients with lung transplant and that it does not impact the outcome of the procedure [
