The assessment of serum and urine Ca++ and inorganic phosphorus (iP), serum Mg++, intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH), and 1,25(OH)2 vitamin D3 in the neonate and serum Ca++ and iP in the mother is essential.

Neonatal transient hypoparathyroidism caused by maternal primary hyperparathyroidism.
 
3.
Abrupt cessation of placenta Ca++ transport and prolonged suppression of the fetal parathyroid glands by maternal hypercalcemia lead to the hypocalcemia.
 
4.
Ca++ and active vitamin D3 administration is the mainstay of treatment to normalize serum Ca++ and prevent recurrent convulsions
