Squamous cell carcinoma of the anus is a relatively rare malignancy that comprises roughly 0.4 % of all cancers and 2.5 % of gastrointestinal cancers in the USA [1, 2]. However, over the last decade, anal carcinoma incidence has steadily increased an average of 2.2 % each year; and unlike the downward trends observed in other HIV-associated cancers, despite the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in 1996, anal carcinoma incidence has not decreased in the HIV-positive population, resulting in total an estimated 7270 new cases and 1010 deaths in 2015 alone [3, 4]. …
