Thickened epidermis is a histological feature commonly observed in various chronic inflammatory skin diseases and has been considered to be simply a result of hyperproliferation of keratinocytes. However, there are apparently fewer proliferating cells in chronic lesions of atopic dermatitis than in those of psoriasis vulgaris [
1], although the thickening of the epidermis is more marked in the former than in the latter [
2]. Therefore, there might be a mechanism distinct from the upregulated proliferation of keratinocytes for the formation of the thickened epidermis of atopic dermatitis. …
