Abstract
A multilayered acupuncture needle packaging waste model was created that outputs an estimated volume of needle packaging waste generated annually by practitioners in five major regions of the globe. The background layer of the model deconstructs the environmental burden of needle types, packaging systems, and sterilization methods, while the foreground layer integrates the number of practitioners, popularity of packaging systems, number of needles used during treatment, and physical measurements of 106 distinct box sizes. Outputs of the model provide qualitative and quantitative measures reflecting the impact of acupuncture needle manufacturing and needle packaging waste on the environment.
