Anaplasma phagocytophilum is an intracellular gram-negative bacteria that infects host granulocytes and is transmitted by different Ixodes strains, Ixodes scapularis and Ixodes pacificus in the USA, Ixodes persulcatus in Asia and Ixodes ricinus ticks in Europe [1]. A. phagocytophilum causes human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA), frequently presenting as a nonspecific febrile illness [2]. Central nervous system involvement is uncommon in HGA with meningoencephalitis reported in only approximately 1% of cases. Several different peripheral nervous system manifestations have been described, including brachial plexopathy, cranial nerve palsies, demyelinating polyneuropathy and bilateral facial nerve palsy [1].
