Social media networks have evolved from basic connection points into complex interlaced networks of information for education, research, and collaboration. Worldwide, 2.8 billion people are active social media users, with Facebook being the dominant platform.1 The Journal’s online leveraging of social media serves to stimulate readership, authorship, and discussion related to publications on anesthesia, pain management, perioperative medicine, and critical care.2 The micro-blogging site Twitter, with more than 300 million active users, is increasingly popular among physicians, and many medical specialties, including anesthesiology, have described experiences with Twitter integration.3-6 Twitter allows users to post concise 140-character “tweets”, to include photographs, video, and links to articles or websites, and to engage directly with other users. Twitter usage has increased among anesthesiologists because of the ability to deliver educational, clinical, and research content around the world. …

Metcalfe's law describes the network effects of communication technologies, such as the social network and the internet, and states that the value of a network is proportional to the square of the number of connected users to the system. In social networks, the more users within the community, the more valuable the service becomes to members of the community.
