In der initialen pharmakologischen Schmerztherapie spielen NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) als rezeptfreie Analgetika eine entscheidende Rolle, vor allem bei milden bis moderaten Schmerzen. Studien belegen eindeutig den Vorteil von topischer im Vergleich zu systemischer Applikation von NSAID.
