Surgery has been the standard of care in resectable desmoid-type fibromatosis (DF) for decades. Active surveillance (AS) was first proposed for patients presenting limb recurrences when limb salvage was not possible. With the observation that more than half of them showed spontaneous stabilization, this strategy was then offered to patients with primary resectable tumors, initially in a monocentric retrospective study.
1 This study was followed by larger multicentric series with a longer follow-up period and cases affecting various anatomic locations, with stabilization or spontaneous regression being demonstrated in more than half of patients.
