Esophagectomy for esophageal cancer is one of the most invasive surgeries, and anastomotic leakage (AL) occasionally occurs after surgery. It is associated with longer hospital stays, increased costs, and poor long-term outcomes. Therefore, efforts to decrease the incidence of AL, early diagnosis, and appropriate intervention should be made. So far, it was suggested that various factors could influence the development of AL, including the blood flow at the anastomotic site, tension on the anastomosis, anastomotic techniques, and patient baseline characteristics such as comorbidities and nutritional status.
