The association between preoperative body mass index (BMI) and short-term outcomes after esophagectomy remains controversial. Differences in demographic data and various BMI categories make it difficult to obtain a consensus definition among studies. Although several meta-analyses have investigated the impact of different BMIs on postoperative complications, they either did not analyze different BMIs individually or did not select the normal-weight group as a comparator.
1–4 Our study aimed to investigate the characteristics of different BMIs in terms of mortality and postoperative complications with the normal-weight group as a comparator.
