In terms of Borrmann type 4, the unique characteristics of extensive cancer cell infiltration with infrequent ulcer formation make diagnosis difficult, leading to poor prognosis due to advanced tumor stage at the time of diagnosis. Accordingly, many studies have been conducted to analyze whether or not Borrmann type 4 is an inherent prognostic factor in gastric cancer.

2 However, because other Borrmann types have been considered a macroscopic feature of advanced gastric cancer that can be classified by preoperative initial endoscopy, the correlation between Borrmann types 1, 2 and 3 and prognostic outcome has been rarely evaluated to date.
3 Indeed, among these Borrmann types, including Borrmann type 4, type 1 has the lowest incidence and a very distinctive morphology protruding into the lumen. Therefore, we investigated the clinical impact of advanced gastric cancer with Borrmann type 1 morphology.
