Ghrelin is a gastrointestinal peptide produced mainly in the stomach in response to fasting, and is involved in multiple functions such as growth hormone (GH) secretion, stimulation of appetite, and a positive energy balance.1 We reported that serum ghrelin levels decrease after upper gastrointestinal cancer surgery,2 and that postoperative intermittent administration of ghrelin after the start of food intake suppresses postoperative weight loss by improving appetite and oral food intake in patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal surgery.3,4 However, effects of continuous intravenous administration of ghrelin during postoperative starvation on body weight and body composition have not been clarified. …
