ASO Author Reflections: Effectiveness of Resection of Oligometastases from Esophageal Cancer

Esophageal cancer is one of the most life-threatening forms of gastrointestinal cancer. The efficacy of chemotherapy and chemoradiotherapy has been demonstrated for this disease and both modalities are widely used. However, despite increasing use of neoadjuvant chemotherapy and neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy, approximately half of the patients who undergo curative esophagectomy for esophageal cancer develop recurrence and the prognosis remains poor. Generally, these patients are referred for systemic therapy with palliative intent. However, our experience has been that pulmonary metastasectomy is effective in selected patients, although we could not reach a conclusion on the indications for pulmonary metastasectomy in patients with esophageal carcinoma because of the small number of cases treated.
