There are multiple classification systems for appendiceal cancer, including Ronnett,
1 World Health Organization,
2 AJCC eighth edition,
3 and Peritoneal Surface Oncology Group International.
4 This has historically made literature reviews and discussions among surgeons and oncologists treating this rare disease difficult. Additionally, National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines still categorize appendiceal malignancies and their treatment with colorectal cancers. However, with experience and genome analyses, we now see them as distinctly different diseases owing to their distinct pathologic features and clinical outcomes. This led a group of surgical oncologists to petition the NCCN to separate the appendiceal neoplasms discussion from colon cancer.
