Hepatic arterial infusion pump (HAIP) therapy has been shown to be an effective treatment to expand resectability and improve survival for colorectal cancer patients with liver-dominant metastatic disease.
1, 2 In patients who present with synchronous liver metastases and are candidates for HAIP therapy, the pump can be implanted simultaneously with the colon resection or can be implanted in a separate operation. Advantages of a simultaneous approach are shorter overall hospital stay and an earlier start of the HAIP chemotherapy treatment, while contamination of the pump during a simultaneous resection is a potential risk when implanting a prosthetic device during a clean-contaminated procedure. …
