Primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) was traditionally managed with bilateral neck exploration (BNE). Preoperative imaging modalities such as sestamibi-SPECT (SeS) and ultrasound (US) allowed for preoperative localization of parathyroid adenomas (PTAs) and the conception of minimally invasive parathyroidectomy (MIP), which achieves comparable cure rates to traditional BNE.
1 Concordant SeS and US findings are associated with successful localization of PTAs and surgical cure in up to 98% of cases.
