Historically, for stage II endometrial cancer, radical hysterectomy has been more widely accepted in clinical practice compared with simple hysterectomy. However, this concept lacks clinical evidence and no prospective study has been conducted to address this issue. Recommendations of the major guidelines concerning the exact type of surgery are somewhat ambiguous.
1,2 Since radical surgery is associated with worse perioperative performance and more long-term complications, the possible benefits should be carefully weighed against the increased morbidity of the procedure. Some retrospective studies have been published to compare the long-time survival between radical and simple hysterectomy but have reported contradicting results. Our meta-analysis investigated the survival impact of radical hysterectomy versus simple hysterectomy in stage II endometrial cancer on the basis of a comprehensive study of existing literature.
