Adjuvant radiation therapy represents the standard of care for most patients following breast-conserving surgery due to a reduction in both local recurrence and breast cancer mortality.
1 Traditionally, adjuvant radiation was delivered with standard whole-breast irradiation over 5–6 weeks, which is associated with toxicities such as fatigue, skin erythema, and desquamation. Late toxicities can include chronic skin changes as well as the potential for other side effects. More recently, hypofractionated whole-breast irradiation has allowed for the completion of treatment in 3–4 weeks; however, this length of treatment remains a challenge for many patients with respect to treatment compliance, and the toxicity profile is similar to standard whole-breast irradiation.
2 Additionally, with low rates of recurrence seen for low-risk early-stage breast cancers, the concern for overtreatment exists, as does the goal to reduce toxicity profiles of adjuvant radiotherapy. …
