As a result of advances in breast reconstruction techniques (perforator flaps, prepectoral implant-based reconstruction) along with assurances of insurance coverage, significantly more women in the US are electing to pursue breast reconstruction after mastectomy.
1 As more women choose to undergo breast reconstruction, they are also becoming more responsible for the cost of their care choices.
2 Breast reconstruction is a preference-sensitive procedure designed to improve a patient’s quality of life. Quality of life is significantly affected by financial strain, and out-of-pocket costs of care and financial toxicity continue to rise for cancer survivors.
