Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) account for only 1% of gastrointestinal malignancies and only 0.1% of malignancies arising in the rectum. GISTs most commonly occur in the stomach and small intestine, whereas only up to 5% of GISTs occur in the rectum.
1 While we will not discuss any specific surgical strategies for rectal GISTs here, there are three modes of surgery for rectal GISTs. Low anterior resection and abdominoperineal resection (APR) are common surgical procedures. Other surgical procedures are local tumor resection, including transanal excision, and transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS).
2 Local resection of rectal GISTs is particularly challenging due to the anatomic constraints of close contacts with surrounding organs. TAMIS with high-resolution imaging enables better visualization of target lesions,
