Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare condition with progressive accumulation of mucinous ascites and mucinous tumor implants throughout the peritoneum. Frequently, PMP is histologically bland and generally shows an indolent clinical course. Nevertheless, poor long-term prognosis has been associated with this disease because most patients have succumbed to intraabdominal disease progression. Only in recent years has the treatment approach involving the use of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) to treat the microscopic residual disease reportedly resulted in survival improvements compared with historical series. Due to the rarity and peculiar biologic behavior of these disease entities, controversies still surround the pathologic classification of PMP and primary lesion of the appendix, which is the most common site of origin for PMP. To address the inconsistencies in PMP terminology, a consensus process was promoted by the Peritoneal Surface Oncology Group International (PSOGI), the final results of which have recently been reported.
