Total mesorectal excision (TME) is still challenging for patients who receive neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT). In particular, significant advances have been made in minimally invasive surgery, including laparoscopic and robotic approaches. However, obtaining a negative circumferential resection margin (CRM) with complete TME remains challenging, especially for patients with low rectal cancer after receiving nCRT.
1 Robotic surgery is increasingly being performed for rectal cancer. However, only a few studies have been conducted for advanced rectal cancer patients receiving nCRT. Some studies have compared robotic and laparoscopic TMEs.
2‐5 However, this study has a limitation in that there are patients with upper rectal cancer who undergo tumor specific excision rather than TME. In addition, there were significant difference in age between the two groups with details on adjuvant chemotherapy missing.
