Mammography-based screening for breast cancer has been shown to significantly reduce mortality from the disease by enhancing early diagnosis and is widely adopted in screening programs throughout the world. Almost all population-based screening guidelines rely on age as the sole determinant for screening eligibility despite the wide variation in personal breast cancer risk. Several validated models are available for calculating individual breast cancer risk on the basis of variables such as family history, reproductive factors, and breast density.
