Die gutartige Vergrößerung der Prostata kann aufgrund ihrer Häufigkeit gut und gerne als Volkskrankheit bezeichnet werden. Ein zentrales Problem im medizinischen Umgang mit dem benignen Prostatasyndrom ist die Progression.
