Because of wide geographic variation in the incidence of gastric cancer, it is a greater health problem in certain countries than in others. For example, its annual age-standardized incidence rate in Japan ranges from 50 to 80 per 100,000 men and from 20 to 30 per 100,000 women, whereas the rates in the United States are about 1/10 of these: 5.9 per 100,000 men and 2.5 per 100,000 women [
1]. These diverse incidence rates appear to be the most plausible explanation for much better treatment and survival results for gastric cancer in Japan than in the United States [
