This conference is focusing on bone strength and the factors that account for it. Quite correctly, the disease process with which it is most concerned is postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMO) because it is the most important metabolic bone disease. However, insights can be gained by considering the matter of bone strength in other diseases. This paper focuses upon primary hyperparathyroidism, another common metabolic bone disease. Insights gained from a consideration of bone strength in primary hyperparathyroidism are of interest for their relevance to the disease itself as well as to how understanding issues of bone strength in a disorder of chronic parathyroid hormone (PTH) excess might be relevant to understanding how the use of intermittent PTH improves bone strength in PMO. …
