Bordetella pertussis DNA detected in a tracheostomized child blood before seroconversion

Despite a widespread pertussis immunization in childhood, the Bordetella pertussis infection (BPI)—including pertussis (i.e. whooping cough)—has risen in many world regions [1], and factors contributing to resurgence (or emergence) of BPI include improved diagnostics [2]. Tracheostomy is a common therapeutic practice for infants with respiratory disturbances, but it inevitably creates a stressful environment in the child’s throat. This environment may hamper the thriving of B. pertussis in the upper respiratory tract [3], which is yet the preferred colonization site of B. pertussis and other Bordetella species, such as Bordetella parapertussis, Bordetella bronchiseptica and Bordetella holmesii. Unlike B. holmesii [4], the tendency to invade the respiratory epithelium in the nasopharynx and trachea and, consequently, to reach the bloodstream and/or the lung tissue is low in B. pertussis [5]. …
