Dialysis was regarded as an exploratory attempt to sustain a patient’s life until the 1960s in many countries. Indeed, the prognosis of patients with terminal-stage chronic renal failure (CRF) was poor and catastrophic at that time [

However, owing to improvements in medical technology and medicine for dialysis, advances in the management of coronary artery disease and critical care medicine as well as the concept of initiating renal replacement therapy earlier, dialysis has started to provide greater benefits than before as a life-saving chronic renal replacement therapy for millions of people worldwide.
