Excerpt

The year 2011 was a turning point in European neurology. Both the European Neurological Society (ENS) and the European Federation of Neurological Societies (EFNS) have agreed in principle to create a new and single entity entitled: the European Academy of Neurology (EAN). An agreement was signed formally in Budapest during the 2011 EFNS congress. With this final creation, the two founding societies will cease to exist thereby forming a unique Academy. While the decision is irreversible, the road to achieve this goal is complicated. The actual foundation will take place in June 2014 during a joint EFNS–ENS meeting in Istanbul. Between now and then, elected delegates will convene in order to formulate bylaws, and to discuss ways to resolve the numerous technical issues that result from such a crucial decision to establish a new organisation concerned with the advancement of European neurology. All these decisions must be fully transparent, and they will be primarily taken by the executive committees of the two founding societies. Subsequently, these decisions must be presented to, and voted on, by the respective society membership during its annual business meeting.
