Despite advances of noninvasive modalities for IBD diagnosis and disease monitoring, endoscopic examination, particularly colonoscopy, remains essential for the diagnosis and surveillance or IBD. Furthermore, high-quality diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy for the purpose of detecting and managing dysplasia and for cancer screening remain the sole acceptable tools for most IBD patients.
