Since 2014, the majority of dermatologists in group practices (54%) have employed physician assistants (PAs) [1]. Between 2013 and 2021, the number of dermatology PAs in the US doubled, reaching 4580 [2]. Despite ranking 5th in employment of PAs, [3] the specialty of dermatology has no published competency guidelines for this growing workforce. In 2023, the National Commission for Certification of PAs released the first standardized test to verify competence of PAs practicing with dermatologist supervision, the Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ). Given the need for dermatologist input in this area, we sought to delineate what knowledge dermatologists would recommend for the training of dermatology-specialized PAs. …
