“Doing CBT” by David F. Tolin checks all the right boxes for a book on its way to becoming a classic text in the field for students, scientists and practitioners of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). At nearly 600 pages, Dr. Tolin thoroughly covers all the principles of what the contemporary, well-trained CBT psychotherapist needs to learn and master. The book has 22 chapters divided into three parts: (1) Why do people suffer? (2) How do we help? and (3) Putting it all together. Dr. Tolin provides a very-well structured, comprehensive yet refreshingly elegant and succinct integration of CBT theory, research and practice. His approach involves integrating behavior-level interventions (e.g., stimulus control, contingency management and graduated exposure), cognitive-level interventions (e.g., identification of maladaptive thoughts, core beliefs and cognitive restructuring) and emotion-level interventions (e.g., distress tolerance and emotional regulation) with ample wit and considerable clinical wisdom. …
