Sportassoziierte Schädelhirntraumata (saSHT) rückten in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten vermehrt in den klinischen und wissenschaftlichen Fokus. Einerseits trug die Erweiterung des Verständnisses rund um SHT und der zugrunde liegenden Pathomechanismen zu einem angepassten klinischen Umgang mit diesen Verletzungen bei, da zum Beispiel im Gegensatz zu früheren Annahmen Bewusstseinsstörungen oder Amnesie keinesfalls obligat für das Vorliegen eines SHT sind. Andererseits sorgte besonders im professionellen Sport die zunehmende mediale Berichterstattung für eine auch klinisch zunehmende Aufmerksamkeit für saSHT. Die von der American Academy of Neurology (AAN) kürzlich publizierten Qualitätskriterien für die Versorgung von Patienten mit saConcussion können bereits gut als Orientierung dienen.
