Zusammenfassung

Demenzsyndrome stellen die wichtigsten Ursachen für kognitive und funktionelle Beeinträchtigungen im Alter dar. Im wissenschaftlichen Kontext wird diese komplexe Erkrankung jedoch überwiegend aus einer eingeengten Perspektive der Neurobiologie und der Medizin betrachtet, während die subjektiven Aspekte, insbesondere die psychologischen und die sozialen Konsequenzen einer Demenz eher vernachlässigt werden. In diesem Beitrag werden die subjektive Seite des Erlebens von Menschen mit Demenzerkrankungen und ihren Angehörigen erörtert sowie besondere Aspekte ihrer spezifischen Probleme und Bedürfnisse beschrieben. Es werden die Fortschritte in den Unterstützungssystemen der letzten Jahre betrachtet, ebenso wie Bereiche, in denen Verbesserungen erforderlich sind.
