Das Ösophaguskarzinom bezeichnet Karzinome im Bereich der Speiseröhre beginnend an der oberen Speiseröhrenöffnung bis hin zum Übergang in den Magen. Das wichtigste klinische Symptom ist die Schluckstörung. Die Sicherung der Diagnose erfolgt durch eine Biopsie und histopathologische Untersuchung. Die wichtigsten technischen Untersuchungen sind beim Staging die Endoskopie ggf. mit Endosonographie und die Computertomographie des Halses, Thorax und Abdomens. Zur Planung der Therapie erfolgt eine Untersuchung des Patienten bezüglich seiner kardialen Leistung, der pulmonalen Reserve, der Nieren- und Leberfunktion, der allgemeinen Operationsfähigkeit sowie eine Abklärung sämtlicher bekannter Vorerkrankungen. Die Therapie des Ösophaguskarzinoms ist abhängig von der histologischen Entität, der Lokalisation, dem Stadium, dem Allgemeinzustand und dem Wunsch des Patienten. Grundsätzlich differenziert zunächst die Fernmetastasierung das therapeutische Vorgehen. Insgesamt ist die Prognose des Ösophaguskarzinoms ungünstig.
