Die Gruppe der selteneren Vaskulitiden im Kindesalter umfasst primäre systemische Vaskulitiden der kleinen oder mittelgroßen Gefäße, monogenetische Vaskulitis-Syndrome, organspezifische Vaskulitiden wie beispielsweise die ZNS-Vaskulitis, die retinale Vaskulitis und die pulmonale Kapillaritis, Vaskulitiden bei Immundefizienz, infektionsassoziierte und medikamentenassoziierte Vaskulitiden. In den vergangenen Jahren haben sich vielen Forschungsteams auf die Suchen nach monogenetischen Ursachen des klinischen Phänotyps „seltene Vaskulitis“ insbesondere im Kindesalter gemacht. Die Defizienz der Deaminase Typ 2, Mutationen im Stimulator von Interferon-Genen (STING), X-chromosomale somatische Mutationen im Ubiquitylation-Initiator Enzym UBA, die Haploinsuffizienz von A20 (HA20) sind wichtige Entdeckungen auf dem Weg zum besseren Verständnis der Erkrankungsursachen und zur Behandlungsoptimierung. Es ist wichtig hervorzuheben, dass diese genetischen Entdeckungen unsere klinischen Diagnose Kriterien herausfordern.
