Zusammenfassung

Bei zahlreichen kritischen Erkrankungen ist ein zellulärer Sauerstoffmangel von zentraler Bedeutung. Das Aufgabengebiet der Höhenmedizin und -physiologie umfasst die Mechanismen der Hypoxietoleranz und der entsprechenden Anpassungsprozesse. Zunehmende Evidenz deutet darauf hin, dass die physiologischen und pathophysiologischen Prozesse eines Bergsteigers in hypobarer Hypoxie denen ähneln, die bei kritisch kranken Patienten von Bedeutung sind. Während in den vergangenen Jahren v. a. Mechanismen des Sauerstofftransports in die Peripherie untersucht wurden, liegt der Fokus in jüngerer Vergangenheit insbesondere auf Veränderungen des zellulären Sauerstoffverbrauchs. In diesem Kapitel werden Parallelen zwischen der Höhenmedizin und der Intensivmedizin aufgezeigt und diskutiert.
