Fracture-related infection (FRI) is one of the most serious problems in orthopaedic care. The incidence of FRI is estimated to be 3%, but may be as high as 45%, depending on comorbidities (diabetes, vascular disease, smoking) and the extent of the injury (presence of severe soft tissue injuries). FRI has a huge impact on the patient’s daily life, since this condition often requires a lengthy treatment regime including multiple reoperations and prolonged antibiotic treatment, and could even require limb amputation. …“It is difficult to treat a disease that has not been properly diagnosed”
