Zusammenfassung

Das Rauchen von Wasserpfeifen (WP), auch bekannt als Shisha oder Hookah, hat sich, insbesondere bei Jugendlichen, in den westlichen Ländern zunehmend als eine Alternative zum Zigarettenrauchen etabliert. Viele Nutzer glauben fälschlicherweise, dass das WP-Rauchen nur eine soziale Form des gemeinsamen Entspannens und Zusammenseins ist, die im Vergleich zum Zigarettenrauchen mit keinen oder deutlich geringeren gesundheitlichen Wirkungen verbunden ist. Tatsächlich sind aktive Raucher jedoch hunderten von toxischen und teilweise kanzerogenen Substanzen mit dem Hauptstromrauch ausgesetzt. Insbesondere die hohen Kohlenmonoxidgehalte und die Exposition gegenüber Nikotin müssen gesundheitlich als sehr kritisch eingeschätzt werden. Es gibt zunehmend Erkenntnisse über die negativen pulmonalen und kardialen Effekte des WP-Rauchens und deutliche Hinweise auf kanzerogene Wirkungen. Auch Passivraucher sind gesundheitlich bedenklichen Substanzen exponiert.
Dringend sind mehr wissenschaftliche Studien zu den gesundheitlichen Wirkungen notwendig und auch Präventionsprogramme zum Schutz der allgemeinen Bevölkerung. Außerdem sollten öffentliche Einrichtungen, in denen WPs geraucht werden, unter das Nichtraucherschutz-Gesetz fallen bzw. konsequenter kontrolliert werden.
Die Übersichtsarbeit fasst Ergebnisse zur äußeren und inneren Exposition gegenüber WP-Rauch zusammen und gibt einen Überblick über die aktuelle wissenschaftliche Literatur zu den gesundheitlichen Wirkungen.
