The Ceiling of The Sistine Chapel (1508–1512) (Fig. 1a) is considered the greatest artistic masterpiece in the world and is visited by over five million people a year. It was painted by Michelangelo (or Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni; 1475–1564), who in-turn is recognized as one of the ‘trinity’ of great masters of the High Renaissance (with Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael).
