Abstract
Trial design
This study is a randomized controlled clinical trial with three parallel arms and double-bind.
Methods
We included participants aged between 18 and 40 who were physically active but not engaged in strength and flexibility training, thirty three were randomized to online system (randomly exchanged blocks) in the two groups stretching that was applied three times a week for six weeks: 2 and 5 min, and a control group did not stretch and was used for comparisons. The aim was to verify the effects of the passive static stretching program on the ankle joint range of motion (ROM) and the Achilles tendon mechanical properties. We evaluated dorsiflexion ROM, isometric and passive torque, hysteresis, myotendinous displacement, tendon cross-sectional area, muscle–tendon unit, and muscle and tendon stiffness before, after, and two weeks post-intervention in the same order, the evaluators were blinded to group assignment.
Results
No losses or exclusions were in the post-intervention, but in the follow-up evaluations were four losses in G2, three in G5, and four participants in CG. 2-min stretching increased ROM after six weeks (p = 0.006), maintaining at follow-up (p = 0.001). The control group also increased ROM (p = 0.009) with a decrease at follow-up. Moreover, the 5-min stretching decreased muscle–tendon stiffness at follow-up (p = 0.019). Muscle stiffness increased at follow-up in the control and 2 min groups (p = 0.01), with no change in the 5 min group. The myotendinous displacement decreases at follow-up only in the 2 min group (p = 0.028). The passive torque increased at follow-up in the control (p = 0.004) and 2 min groups (p = 0.001) but did not in the 5 min group.
Conclusion
Different stretching times do not change tendon properties, but 2 min passive stretching increases the ROM maintained at follow-up.
