Zusammenfassung

Die Plazenta als kindliches Organ, das in den mütterlichen Blutkreislauf eingeschaltet ist, produziert eine erstaunlich hohe Zahl an endokrinen Botenstoffen. Teilweise werden diese ansonsten nur im Hypothalamus oder in der Hypophyse in ähnlicher Form synthetisiert. Der spezielle Aufbau des Organs und eine funktionell bedeutende Barriere zwischen mütterlichem und kindlichem Blut, die sog. Plazentaschranke, sorgen dafür, dass plazentare Hormone auch selektiv schwerpunktmäßig auf die Mutter oder eher auf das sich entwickelnde Kind wirken. Obwohl bereits sehr viel über die Hormonproduktion in der Plazenta bekannt ist, bleiben doch noch einige Fragen offen. So ergab sich etwa, im Unterschied zu sämtlichen anderen endokrinen Organen, bislang keine Notwendigkeit einer insuffizienzbedingten Plazentahormonsubstitution.
