Pediatric radiologists have many personal resources to draw from, including intellect, education and experience, but one of the most important is character — not so much a fund of knowledge or technical skill, but who one is as a person, including such traits as generosity, honesty and compassion. Character is cultivated not so much by memorizing information or practicing a maneuver, but by emulation. We become better people because we are favorably impressed by the goodness of others and seek to cultivate such virtues in ourselves. One notable source of such insights and inspiration is also one of the founders of pediatric radiology, Edward Neuhauser. In particular, the story of Neuhauser’s career and life conveys five lessons of enduring value to pediatric radiologists today. …
