A 29-year-old woman was evaluated in the emergency department for fevers and lower abdominal pain. She had recently been admitted to an outside hospital for diverticulitis and treated with intravenous antibiotics. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) was interpreted as showing complicated sigmoid diverticulitis with associated abscess. Past medical history was notable for two prior episodes of complicated diverticulitis; one episode involved colonic perforation while the patient was 3 months pregnant that resulted in pregnancy loss. This was managed with a Hartmann’s procedure that was later reversed. She had previously undergone cholecystectomy and two cesarean sections without complications. …
