Why should an eye-care professional require a book on internal medicine? The quote from page 2 in Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine, 18th Edition frames my response to this question: “As today’s physician struggles to integrate copious amounts of scientific into everyday practice, it is important to remember that the ultimate goal of medicine is to prevent disease and treat sick patients.” Physicians are responsible for the care of their patients. Your patients may have diverse signs and symptoms which may provide indications of various diseases, and you could recommend further consultation with other clinicians. In addition, the basic science principles of disease are germane for eye-care professionals. Harrison’s can serve as a valuable resource for the continuing education of physicians, which helps to fulfill their professional obligation to stay current. …
