Zusammenfassung

Der Immunologe und Nobelpreisträger Sir Peter Medawar beschrieb ein Jahr vor der ersten geglückten Organtransplantation 1953 das immunologische Paradoxon der Toleranz des mütterlichen Immunsystems gegenüber dem Fetus, obwohl dieser jeweils zur Hälfte Gene der Mutter und des Vaters trägt. Da dies fundamental den damaligen Vorstellungen der Selbst-Fremd-Erkennung widersprach, rückten die Austauschprozesse an der fetomaternalen Grenzzone in den Fokus der Wissenschaft.
