In their study, Machado et al. present a robust and methodologically sound contribution to the growing literature on ozone therapy as a potential disease-modifying treatment in degenerative joint disorders (Machado et al. 2025). One of the major strengths of this research lies in its careful experimental design, which aligns the timing of intervention with the pathophysiological progression of osteoarthritis (OA), targeting the inflammatory phase for maximal therapeutic efficacy. By utilizing a well-established model of TMJ-OA induced by monosodium iodoacetate (MIA) and applying ozone therapy during a clearly defined window of acute inflammation, the authors offer mechanistic insights into how early modulation of molecular mediators like MMP-9 may confer transient chondroprotective benefits (Machado et al. 2025). …
