Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a highly diverse hematologic malignancy characterized by autonomous clonal proliferation of immature myeloid cells that are unable to differentiate or mature normally. Abnormal proliferation of leukemic cells in the bone marrow markedly impairs normal hematopoiesis, causing various symptoms associated with leukopenia, anemia, and thrombocytopenia.
