Auszug

Atherosklerotisch bedingte Stenosen der Arteria carotis interna sind für 8-15 % aller ischämischen Schlaganfälle verantwortlich. Die Karotisendarteriektomie hat bei mittel- bis höhergradigen symptomatischen Karotisstenosen ihre Überlegenheit gegenüber einer rein konservativen Therapie belegt. Bei Vorliegen einer höhergradigen symptomatischen Karotisstenose soll frühzeitig eine Karotisendarteriektomie durchgeführt werden. Bei Patienten unter 70 Jahren mit einer symptomatischen 50-99 %igen Karotisstenose kann ein Karotisstenting in Betracht gezogen werden. Abgesehen von den verfahrensbedingten Komplikationen sind beide Behandlungen mittel- bis langfristig gleich wirksam bei der Prävention von Schlaganfällen.
